About HAPS

Why study indoor air?

Outdoor air pollution is known to impact heart and lung health but we do not know as much about the quality of the air we breathe inside our homes. Household Air Pollution Study (HAPS), was established at Tulane School of Public Health to see how indoor air quality affects heart and lung health.

How are we going to do this?

Our team will set up equipment to measure the level of pollution in participant’s homes for seven days and then for another seven days 6 months later. We will also come to the home to measure blood pressure, heart rate and lung function for four of these days.

What can you expect?

  • We will visit your home to collect air samples and health data.
  • On the first day we will place 2 air monitors in your living room to measure PM2.5 and NO2.  We will also measure temperature and humidity in your home.
  • We will also ask you some questions  in order to figure out the sources of air pollution in your home.in addition to measuring the level of air pollution in your home, we want to measure how much air pollution you breathe.
  • We will ask you to wear an air monitor (in a backpack) every day for seven days to get this information.
  • The first visit to your home will take around 1 hour, and each following visit will be no longer than 30 minutes.
  • Six months later we will return for another week and collect this data again.

When you complete the seven day study you will be given a $50 gift card (2 total weeks=$100) as compensation for your time. If you refer eligible friends and family and they join HAPS, you may receive a bonus.

Benefits of Participating

You will receive a copy of all information about your personal health (blood pressure and lung function). You will also receive information about the levels of air pollution in your home. If you complete the study you will receive up to $100+!
